Friday, October 12, 2007 was no usual Friday. The second annual Jefferson Homecoming saw the return of class members from 1949 to present day. There was a Homecoming court parade, and of course the football team beat Cleveland 58-0.

The state championship teams of 1957 and 1958 were remembered with some of those team members actually making it onto the field for a special event: the retiring of Terry Baker's and Mel Renfro's jersey numbers, 11 and 57. Mel Renfro was mobbed by the football team, reaching out to touch him as he pepped them up for the game. Other '57 and '58 team members present were Doug White, Mike Hanselman, Al Baracco, Mick Hergert, Joe Fred Watson, Ancil Nance, Dick Brooks, Leon Broadus, Cliff Walker, and announcer Art Eckman. Nate Jones, Bob Gill, and Clauis Nickleberry added to the return of the champions. For a super large version of the banner photo, click HERE.

Leon Broadous models a sweatshirt. They are for sale from the Alumni office, 503.331.7507. It is hoped that many will join the Alumni association and give to the fund for a new reader board. New life has been brought to Jefferson through the efforts of Maggie Brister-Mashia and the other board members.

Art Eckman, Bob Gill, Clifford Walker. Clifford may be trying to talk about changing the school name so that kids don't have to attend a school named after a famous slaveowner. He is apt to ask how a Jewish kid would like to go to Adolf Hitler High School. Conversation gets confused after that, since most of us went to Jeff not knowing that Jefferson held slaves, shagged at least one (Sally Hemmings) and had offspring from that relationship. What else did they not tell us!  Oh, right, Washington grew hemp, which DEA  got outlawed around 1937, since they didn't know squat about it. That's another school and story, however.
